Ekta Diwas, at Patel Chowk, in New Delhi
New Delhi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his birth anniversary and remembered his contribution to India.
"I bow to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his birth anniversary. We recall his rich contribution to India," Modi tweeted.

"Paid floral tributes to the great Sardar Patel," Modi wrote in another with a picture.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was born on October 31, 1875 in Nadiad, a small village in Gujarat. He was conferred with the highest civilian honour, Bharat Ratna, in 1991 for his services to the nation. Patel was popularly known as the 'Iron man' of India.

In his 25th Mann Ki Baat address on Diwali, Modi had urged the nation to promote unity and equality.

"Tomorrow we are celebrating Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's birth anniversary. He worked to bring everyone together, he worked for unity, fought for unity and brought unity amongst people and we all must remember it," Modi said.

Modi said: "He gave us a united India and to keep it united is our responsibility."

From this year, Diwali was also made an optional holiday at the UN and a "Happy Diwali" message was also displayed on the New York building of the UN.

New Delhi
Exactly one hundred years ago in June, 1916 a stylish Gujarati barrister mocked at a new visitor in Kathiwari dress to Gujarat Club, Ahmedabad. The barrister kept playing cards with his friends, even as the visitor delivered a lecture to a tiny audience in the lawn. He knew that visitor was none else than Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, who had set up his Satyagraha Ashram in Ahmedabad recently after returning from South Africa. But the barrister, a successful criminal lawyer, had no interest in Gandhi’s pursuits. But as Gandhi persisted with his visits for talks, the barrister decided to attend once out of sheer curiosity.

*PRIYADARSHI DUTTA
The talk sounded like a religious discourse rather than political speech. Yet something changed permanently inside the 41-year old unemotional barrister. Gandhi’s words kept haunting him for days till he became ‘reluctant recruit’ to Satyagraha’s cause. But being a pragmatic individual to the core, he did not openly join it until 1917. That year Gandhi was recognized as India’s political messiah after Champaran Satyagraha. He then became a loyal disciple of Gandhi, and subsequently became his most capable lieutenant. Whatever Gandhi conceptualized, he organized; whatever were Gandhi’s plans, he implemented. He burnt down his European suits and adopted dhoti-kurta made of Khadi. He was Sardar Ballabhbhai Jhaveribhai Patel (1875-1950), the iron man of India.

Patel was born on October 31, 1875 at Nandiad (dist Khera, Gujarat), around 200 kms from Surat. He hailed from the community of Leva Patels, believed to have descended from warrior caste, though traditionally engaged in cultivation. They have a history of bravery and hard labour. Patel hailed from an agriculturist family, and virtually grew up in the fields. He always introduced himself as a farmer/agriculturist, even at the height of legal or political career. He had three brothers and one sister. Out of them Vithalbhai Jhaveribhai Patel (1873-1933), Bar-at-Law, became the first Indian President (Speaker) of the Central Legislative Assembly.

Patel showed his promise as a popular leader as an elected representative of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (1917-1928). He was able to not only outsmart the British officialdom, but took several constructive initiatives for the townspeople. While being President of the Corporation (1924-1928) he once presented a unique example of ‘Swachh Bharat’. Patel, along with volunteers, cleaned the streets of Ahmedabad with brooms and dustcart, beginning with Harijan Basti (Dalit quarters). As the Plague broke out in Ahmedabad in 1917, he worked almost round the clock with his volunteers to help the victims and their families.
He worked at great personal risk of infection as Lokmanya Tilak had done during Pune Plague, 1896. The strain broke Patel’s robust health, but sealed his reputation as a mass leader. Around the same time Khera Satyagraha (1918), a forerunner to epic Bardoli No-Tax Campaign (1928), reinforced Patel’s leadership qualities. Though the tax settlements demanded by the peasants at Kheda (Gujarat) were not fully met, it had two important results. First it led to recognition of peasants as stakeholders in determining land taxes, and it brought Gandhi and Patel together. A decade later Gujarat was ravaged by floods after the torrential rains of July 23, 1927.
Patel mounted a Herculean mission to rescue and rehabilitate the flood victims, which brought him to nationwide focus. The Bombay government (Gujarat was then part of Bombay Presidency) recommended him for an award, which Patel politely declined.

This humility was the hallmark of Patel even after his great victory at Bardoli (1928). He was reluctant to stand up at Calcutta Congress in December, 1928. After repeated persuasion he stood up in the audience amongst delegates from Gujarat, and had to be physically forced to come to the dais. Bardoli (Dist. Surat) was Patel’s Kurukshetra. He gave extraordinary leadership to successful tax resistance campaign that rolled on for three months. Only Tilak’s Famine Relief Campaign in Maharashtra (1896) could be compared to it in organizational brilliance.
Patel organized the Satyagraha on military pattern though completely non-violent. He himself was the Supreme Commander (Senapati) and under him were Sector Commanders (Vibhag Patis), and under then volunteers (Sainik). The battle field covered 92 villages and 87,000 peasants. He ran a thorough information network involving horse mounted messengers, bhajan singers, paper printers etc. His success at Bardoli, attracted the attention of the whole British Empire. But the best recognition came from a farmer of Nanifalod, in Bardoli Taluka. Kuverji Durlabh Patel said in an open meeting, “Patel you are our Sardar’. Thereupon the title ‘Sardar’ attached to him permanently.

Patel’s disciplinarian approach was legendary. Self-discipline was Gandhi’s mantra. But Patel brought the organizational discipline and cohesion necessary for mass movements. Patel arrived on the political scene exactly when Indian politics hit mass-movement stage. John Gunther, the American journalist, who surveyed Asian politics in 1930s found Patel ‘party boss par excellence’. He found Patel a man of action, of practicality, the man who got things done.

Patel’s organizational capacities were at test as independence approached. There was a threat of India’s balkanization had the princely states, numbering around 565, not joined Indian Union. Some like Travancore wanted to remain free, whereas others like Bhopal and Hyderabad conspired to join Pakistan, though not contagious to it. Partly by diplomacy and partly by coercion, Patel won over the princely states to join the Indian union. Force had to be applied in the case of Hyderabad, where Razakars had unleashed terror on subject population.

As independent India’s first Home Minister, he dealt with onerous responsibilities of resettling Hindu and Sikh refugees from Pakistan and organizing the civil services etc. Philip Mason, ICS, said Patel was a natural administrator who did not seem to need any prior experience. Kaka Kalekar, Gandhi’s close associate, said Patel belonged to the illustrious class of Shivaji and Tilak though he was an unquestioning follower of Gandhi. Patel completed 75 years in 1950, in a broken health due to excessive strain. He passed away in Mumbai on December 15, 1950. On the death bed he betrayed no anxiety about his family, but about the condition of the country.

It is a pity that the legacy of Patel suffered from neglect. The present government has done well to rectify the wrongs of history, and highlight Patel as India’s master nation builder.

Indian space agency ISRO is aiming for a world record by putting into orbit 83 satellites -- two Indian and 81 foreign -- on a single rocket in early 2017, a top official of Antrix Corporation said.

He said the company's order book stands at Rs 500 crore while negotiations are on for launch order for another Rs 500 crore.

"During the first quarter of 2017 we plan to launch a single rocket carrying 83 satellites. Most foreign satellites are nano satellites," Rakesh Sasibhushan, Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Antrix Corporation said.

Antrix Corporation is the commercial arm of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

He said all the 83 satellites will be put in a single orbit and hence there will not be any switching off and on of the rocket. The major challenge for the proposed mission is to hold the rocket in the same orbit till all the satellites are ejected.

He said ISRO will use its Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle XL (PSLV-XL) rocket variant for the record launch.

For ISRO, launch of multiple satellites at one go is not a new thing as it has done it several times in the past.

According to Sasibhushan, the total payload/weight carried off into space by the PSLV-XL rocket will be around 1,600 kg.

Citing non-disclosure agreements, Sasibhushan declined to name the clients whose satellites ISRO will put into orbit.

He said some satellites belong to clients whose satellites ISRO put into orbit in the past.

Meanwhile, ISRO is conducting high-altitude tests with its own cryogenic engine that is expected to power the heavier rocket Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle-Mk III (GSLV Mk III).

The GSLV Mk III has a capacity to carry around four tonnes of load. The rocket is scheduled to be flown in January 2017. The GSLV Mk III rocket is expected to save precious foreign exchange for India as it pays to launch heavier satellites through foreign space agencies.

In an interaction, ISRO Chairman A.S. Kiran Kumar said the agency is looking forward to develop four-tonne communication satellites that will give the same output as a six-tonner.

Hillary Clinton
Washington
Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton says she is "confident" a new FBI probe linked to her emails will not change its original finding that she should not be prosecuted and wants the agency to immediately explain the inquiry to the American people.

"We don't know the facts, which is why we are calling on lease all of the information that it has. Even Director (James) Comey noted that this new information may not be significant. So let's get it out," Clinton, 69, told reporters.

During the rare press conference, which lasted a little over five minutes, Clinton said that it is incumbent on the FBI to clarify the issue.

"It is incumbent upon the FBI to tell us what they are taking about. Because right now, your guess is as good as mine. And I don't think that's good enough," she said when asked if she has spoken with her close aide Huma Abedin, the center of the controversy.

The FBI decided to re-open the case after it found some emails on the electronics devise of Abedin's husband Anthony Weiner. The FBI has not said what kind of email was found on this devise.

"We are 11 days out from perhaps the most important national election of our lifetimes. Voting is already under way in our country. So the American people deserve to get the full and complete facts immediately. The director himself has said he doesn't know whether the e-mails referenced in his letter are significant or not. I'm confident whatever they are will not change the conclusion reached in July," Clinton said.

"Therefore it's imperative that the Bureau explain this issue in question, whatever it is, without any delay. I look forward to moving forward to focus on the important challenges facing the American people, winning on November 8, and working with all Americans to build a better future for our country," she said.
Clinton said she and her campaign have not been contacted by anyone from the FBI on this issue.
Leading in almost all major polls, Clinton exuded confidence that this is unlikely to have an impact in the election results.

"I think people a long time ago made up their minds about the e-mails. I think that's factored into what people think. And now they're choosing a president," she said in response to a question.

The week-long celebration of film, entertainment and culture came to an end here as the Jio MAMI 18th Mumbai Film Festival wrapped up with a prize distribution ceremony.

Graced by Amrita Fadnavis, wife of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the audience experienced a beautiful evening on Thursday that not only awarded deserving filmmakers but also the authors of film literature.

It was a star studded evening with many personalities from the film fraternity present including Vinod Chopra, Raju Hirani, Richa Chadda, Ayan Mukherjee, Kunal Kapoor, Abhay Deol, Kabir Khan, Vishal Bhardwaj, Sonam Kapoor, Zoya Akhtar among others.

As lyricist Kausar Munir mentioned that film writing is a genre of literature that has not been considered as a part of mainstream literature, this time the festival opened the door for books in English, Hindi and other language to encourage more authors.

While "Naya Dur Ka Naya Cinema" by Priyadarshan got the best book award in Hindi, Mekhala Sengupta's book "Kanan Devi, The First Superstar of Indian Cinema" won the best book in English category.

Keeping the importance of film history and literature in mind, the festival awarded film writer Anil Bhargav (Hindi) and Jay Arjun Singh (English) as Excellence in Best Writing category for their book "Bhartiya Cinemas Ki Itihaas" and "The World of Hrishikesh Mukherjee: The Filmmaker Everyone Loves", respectively.

Actress Sonam Kapoor said, "Being a voracious reader, I believe that a good story is a key element of many things. Our Bollywood films are changing and now we celebrate content more. Even my film Aisha was based on a book."

"Most of my favourite films like 'The Godfather', 'Gone with The Wind' is based on books. So I support and really appreciate the initiative by Jio MAMI," she added.

"Lady Of The Lake" by Haobam Paban Kumar won the Golden Gateway from India Gold category, whereas in international competition section young French filmmaker Davy Chou won the Golden Gateway for his film "Diamond Island".

New York
As the US presidential election moves into the home stretch, financial markets are not fully invested in polls that show a win for Hillary Clinton.

Even though polls show the Democratic candidate with a strong lead over Republican Donald Trump, analysts say investors are waiting until after 8 November to lay their money on the table.

"I don't think it's fully 100 percent Clinton is in," said JJ Kinahan, chief market strategist at TD Ameritrade, who sees a pullback in risk-oriented investments as a sign of investor caution.

Wall Street is thought to generally favor Clinton over Trump for president, and equity markets have hovered at historically high levels since July, with the S&P 500 less than three percent below its all-time peak."Usually people are looking to take on extra risk for reward," he said. "I think this is one case where people are paring back on their risk."

Clinton is considered the more market-friendly outcome, expected to maintain the policies of outgoing President Barack Obama, while the market views Trump as a great unknown, both because of his penchant for controversy and his lack of a record in public office.

Trump has attacked trade partners China and Mexico and accused Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen of being a political tool of the Democratic party. Investors are also unsettled by Trump's seeming embrace of Russian President Vladimir Putin, a sign he may take foreign policy in radical new directions.

Signs of nervousness have been seen in certain trades, analysts say, like the Mexican peso. Trump's pledge of immigration controls and trade restrictions with Mexico have raised worries over its economy.

The peso sank against the dollar as Trump's campaign added momentum, but then rebounded on Clinton's gains following the first presidential debate on 26 September.

But it remains down about 9 percent since Trump secured his party's nomination in May.

On the other hand, another gauge of market sentiment has been the biotechnology sector, which is seen as vulnerable in a Clinton presidency given the Democrat's vow to address runaway drug prices. The Nasdaq biotechnology index has fallen about nine percent over the last month.

Some analysts say the markets have already assumed a Clinton victory.

"To me, the markets clearly want a Clinton win and they have priced that in," said Nathan Thooft, senior managing director at Manulife Asset Management.

"That's what they predict, and that's what they want. If that doesn't happen, I feel there's a great level of uncertainty and possible downside to the markets."

Some 'complacency' over Trump

Indeed, investors are aware that Trump has been consistently underestimated by the political, media and business establishment. Many are also loath to repeat the error of Britain's June referendum to leave the European Union, when polling supported the market bet on a "stay" vote, only to be thrown into turmoil when Brexit passed.

"There's a bit of complacency in the market." said Kathy Lien of BK Asset Management,

"I think the market's underestimating the possibility of things going wrong as a result of either a Trump victory or the possibility of internal strife in the nation as a result of Clinton winning," she said.

Pune
Pune is set to host India's next Davis Cup tie against New Zealand on the hard courts of Balewadi Sports Complex and the team's support staff could be in for some change as the tenure of both non-playing captain Anand Amritraj and coach Zeeshan Ali is ending later this year.
The Indian team was whitewashed in the World Group Play-off by mighty Spain in New Delhi while New Zealand had blanked Pakistan 5-0 to stay in Asia/Oceania Group I.

AITA vice president Bharat Oza, with permission from Secretary General Hironmoy Chatterjee, made the announcement at a press conference.

"The decision to host the tie was made at the AITA Management Committee on 24 October," Oza, who is also President of the Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association (MSLTA), said.

Oza said MSLTA was the only Association that showed interest in hosting the tie, scheduled for 3-5 February.

"Davis Cup is a loss-making proposition, that's why not many come forward to host it," he said adding that the state government will support them for the organisation of the tie.

Oza also said the term of both Amritraj, who had replaced SP Misra and Zeeshan, who came in place of Nandan Bal, will end in December.

"Their performance will be assessed by the selection committee which will submit a report to the Executive Committee, which will then decide if a change is required. There will be deliberation but I don't want to speculate," he said.

However, Oza dropped hints that there maybe a change when he said that, "AITA would like to see rules and disciplines be implemented."

It had been reported recently that Amritraj had failed to impose discipline in the team.

Asked if the players' feedback will also be taken before deciding the fate of Amritraj and Zeeshan, Oza said it is AITA's "prerogative to decide on the issue".

When reminded that it was on the players' insistence that Misra and Nandan Bal were removed in 2013 and replaced by Amritraj and Zeeshan, Oza said the Federation will decide on this.

"AITA has been soft (on players)," he said adding that they do not appreciate the comments that were made by a few players when the changes were made.

MSLTA Secretary Sunder Iyer said it will be the first Davis Cup tie in Pune in 42 years. The last tie was held in 1974 when India hosted Russia on grass at Deccan Gymkhana.

"The players have also given a positive feedback on the facilities and courts here. They are happy to play," Iyer said.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh
New Delhi
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has commended the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Force for securing the borders with China most effectively. Addressing the 55th Raising Day Parade of ITBP at Greater Noida , Rajnath Singh said instances of transgressions on the Sino-Indian border have declined significantly.

Referring to the ITBP guards successfully foiling the terrorist attacks to storm the Indian Consulates in Afghanistan at Mazar-e-Sharif and Jalalabad, the Union Home Minister said the ITBP shoulders a big responsibility not only on the Himalayan border but also in the hinterland such as the LWE affected regions, insurgency in the North-East and key assets and missions at home and in the most challenging environments abroad. Rajnath Singh said terrorism is a proxy-war being waged against India and only cowards resort to proxy war, not the brave.

The Union Home Minister called upon the Directors General of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) to ensure the highest level of morale of the jawans and officers. On its part the Ministry of Home Affairs has ensured the welfare of the CAPF personnel and their families, he added. The compensation payable to families of CAPF personnel as victims of accidents on duty or martyred in extremist violence has been hiked from Rs. 10 lakhs to Rs. 25 lakhs w.e.f. January 1, 2016. Similarly, personnel who lose life due to natural calamity while deployed on borders will get Rs.35 lakhs instead of Rs.15 lakhs earlier. Rajnath Singh said the entire cost of education of martyrs’ children will be borne by the government. The Union Home Minister also declared that a medal is being introduced for deployment on 9,000 feet altitude and above.

On the occasion, the Union Home Minister reviewed and took the salute of an impressive parade. Rajnath Singh also gave away medals and trophies to the ITBP personnel and Battalions.

Himachal Pradesh
Shimla
Himachal Pradesh was declared Open Defecation Free (ODF), making it the second State in the country (after Sikkim) to achieve the feat. The State government made the declaration today at a public event in Shimla, where the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Virbhadra Singh, felicitated the respective District Administrators and Local Administrators for successfully achieving this significant milestone. The Union Minister for Drinking Water and Sanitation, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Narendra Singh Tomar, and the Union Ministry for Health and Family Welfare, JP Nadda, were also present on the occasion.

With this, Himachal Pradesh has successfully achieved a total rural sanitation coverage of 100% in the State, with all 12 out of 12 districts in the State being both, declared as well as verified, as ODF.

Speaking at the occasion Chief Minister, Virbhadra Singh, said that he was very happy and proud that his State was the first large State in the country to have achieved this milestone. He said that the State of Himachal Pradesh would be very happy to share lessons that they have learnt in this journey with other States to help realize the vision of a Swachh Bharat.

Addressing the gathering, the Union Minister for Drinking Water and Sanitation, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Narendra Singh Tomar, said that Himachal Pradesh would not have been able to lay claim to this landmark achievement if making sanitation a priority had not become a jan aandolan, a people’s movement, in the State.

He said that he was very confident that it was thanks to the people of Himachal Pradesh that not only had the State achieved the ODF Status, but would be able to sustain it in the future as well.

The Union Ministry for Health and Family Welfare, JP Nadda, in his address, said that as Himachal Pradesh was also his home State, this was an occasion that brought double joy to him. He also spoke about the close relationship between access to sanitation and good health for rural India. He said that the two Union Ministries will work closely together to achieve convergence in the pursuit of a Swachh and healthy India.

Parameswaran Iyer, Secretary, Ministry of Drinking Water & Sanitation, Vidya Chander Pharka, Chief Secretary, Himachal Pradesh and other State dignitaries were also present on the occasion.

Indian defender Surender Kumar will not play any role in the ongoing fourth Asian Champions Trophy hockey tournament after being suspended for two matches following a deliberate foul during the game against Malaysia.

Asian Hockey Federation's Technical Delegate Ramesh Appoo conducted a disciplinary hearing under the Code of Conduct and found Surender guilty of a serious foul, warranting suspension for two matches.

The Indian defender, whose good performance in the Champions Trophy earned him a place in the squad for the Olympic Games, will have to sit out of the knockout round, starting with the semifinal.

"Having considered the evidence before me, including the explanation given by Surender, I have imposed a two-match suspension," the Technical Delegate said."

Surender was shown a yellow card by the umpire for an off-the-ball incident in which Surender lifted his stick in an appropriate manner, thereby causing his stick to hit the chin of a Malaysian player," Appoo said in a statement.

Surender was sent off in the 49th minute of India's last league match, which they won 2-1 to take the top spot in the round-robin league and now await the last couple of preliminary matches before knowing who they play in the semifinal.

After Surender got the yellow card, India had to play the rest of the match with 10 players but managed to ward off Malaysia's rapid attacks.

India managed to get a late match-winner off a penalty corner from Rupinder Pal Singh with just two minutes left. A one-match suspension was also imposed on Malaysian player Ashari Firhan.

"Team India handed me a video in which Ashari was seen making a deliberate physical contact by extending his elbow into the body of Indian player Akashdeep Singh in an off-the-ball incident," Appoo said.

"I have imposed a one-match suspension on Ashari," he said.

Minister of Culture Mahesh Sharma made a faux pas at an event in New Delhi when he addressed New Zealand's Prime Minister John Key as "McCullum".

The event was organised to promote New Zealand tourism in India and, apart from Sharma and Key, Brendon McCullum, who earlier skippered that country's cricket team in all three forms of the game, was also present.

The gaffe happened when Sharma began his speech, addressing Key as "His excellency Prime Minister McCullum".

The event was aimed at promoting cultural exchanges between the two countries and, ignoring the mix-up, Key said New Zealand is looking forward to having more Indian tourists visiting the nation.
Moments after the minister made the blunder, Bollywood actor Sidharth Malhotra, who is New Zealand tourism's ambassador in India, rose to speak but could not recall Sharma's name. After fumbling for a few seconds, he said wittily "It's payback time".

He said getting Malhotra on board was their way of attracting youngsters from India to visit the country which is one of the best destinations for adventure and nature tourism.

Malhotra, who visited New Zealand last year to shoot some promotional videos, was presented an All Blacks (rugby team) jersey by the Prime Minister and, to honour the foreign dignitary on his India visit, the actor gifted him a handmade lion depicting confidence and power.

The 31-year-old actor will be travelling across New Zealand for around 10 days to shoot a new set of promotional videos.

United Nations
Marking a significant shift in stance, the US for the first time abstained from voting on a UN resolution that underlined the need to end the trade embargo imposed by America against Cuba, a move welcomed by India and other nations.

In a near unanimous action, the General Assembly on Wednesday adopted the resolution in which India along with 190 other countries voted in favour while the US which had been opposing it for 25 years cast an abstention along with Israel.

She said the US policy of isolation toward Cuba was not working and instead of isolating Cuba "our policy isolated the United States. Including right here at the United Nations". Power, however, added that abstaining on the resolution did not mean the US agrees with all of the policies and practices of the Cuban government."For more than 50 years, the United States had a policy aimed at isolating the government of Cuba.

"For roughly half of those years, UN Member States have voted overwhelmingly for a General Assembly resolution that condemns the US embargo and calls for it to be ended. The United States has always voted against this resolution. Today the US will abstain," said US ambassador to the UN Samantha Power at the meeting of the Cuba embargo.

"We are profoundly concerned by the serious human rights violations that the Cuban government continues to commit with impunity against its own people – including arbitrarily detaining those who criticize the government; threatening, intimidating, and, at times, physically assaulting citizens who take part in peaceful marches and meetings; and severely restricting the access that people on the island have to outside information," she said.

Of the Assembly's 193 Members, 191 voted in favour of the text which welcomed the progress in the relations between the two countries as well as the visit of US President Barack Obama to Cuba in March this year. India's Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Tanmaya Lal said there was little doubt that the continued existence of the embargo, in contravention of world opinion as expressed by the Assembly, undermined multilateralism and the credibility of the United Nations itself.

He said successive reports of the Secretary-General had established that the US' embargo against Cuba, particularly through its extraterritorial effects, had adversely impacted the Cuban people.

Lal added India acknowledged the notable socioeconomic and development achievements of the Cuban people, particularly their high Human Development Index ranking and Cuba's achievement of the several Millennium Development Goals.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday attacked Narendra Modi-led central government, calling it "anti-army".

He also attacked the central government for giving "another" extension to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed to probe 1984 riots.

In a tweet, Kejriwal alleged that the central government is "just using" the army's sacrifices for political gains.

"Weak OROP, reduction in disability pension and now this. Isn't Modi government anti-army? They just milch army's sacrifices for political gains," he wrote.

Kejriwal's tweet came in response to a media report, which he quoted in his tweet, saying that the armed forces are upset with a letter issued by the Defence Ministry regarding their rank disparity vis-a-vis their civilian counterparts.

According to the quoted report, the Defence Ministry circular brings the rank of armed forces officers a notch down compared to their earlier status.

One Rank One Pension (OROP) scheme aims to grant retired armed forces personnel pension parity with those retiring now.

Indian soldiers receive disability pension equal to their last drawn salary for 100 per cent disability. The government recently turned it into a slab system, which, according to critics, significantly reduced their pension.

The Defence Ministry later asked the Anomaly Committee of the 7th Pay Commission to continue with the old system.

In another tweet, Kejriwal also attacked the central government over the SIT investigating 1984 riots.

"Extension after extension. Zero result till now. Obviously, there is no intention (to bring justice). Intention is to save culprits of 1984 riots," Kejriwal tweeted, quoting another media report.

The media report said that the SIT set up by the Home Ministry has been given another extension till February 2017.

The panel set up in February 2015 was initially granted six months to file report, but was later given two extensions.

Prime Minister, Narendra Modi with the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Mr. John Key, at Hyderabad House, in New Delhi
New Delhi
India and New Zealand agreed to strengthen ties in key areas of trade, defence and security during talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Kiwi counterpart John Key, who also assured that his country will contribute "constructively" to the process currently underway in the NSG to consider India's membership.

After the "productive" talks between the two Prime Ministers, the two sides inked three pacts including one pertaining to Avoidance of Double Taxation and the Prevention of Fiscal Evasion with respect to Taxes on Income and decided to establish Foreign Minister-level dialogue as well as exchanges on cyber issues.

Asserting that they had detailed and productive discussions on all aspects of the bilateral engagement and multilateral cooperation, Modi at a joint media event with Key said, "I am thankful to Prime Minister Key for New Zealand's constructive approach to the consideration of India's membership of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG)."

There was no clear word of support on India's entry into 48-nation NSG from the visiting leader, who only said, "New Zealand would continue to contribute constructively to the process currently underway in the NSG to consider India's membership."

Noting that they had a "detailed" discussion on India's NSG bid, Key also said, "New Zealand is committed to working with NSG members to reach a decision as soon as possible."

New Zealand acknowledged the "importance to India of it joining the NSG", a joint statement issued after the talks said, adding that India stressed that this would provide the predictability necessary for meeting India's clean energy goals in the context of the Paris agreements.

New Zealand was one of the countries that took the stand at the last NSG plenary in South Korea in June that no exception can be made in the case of India, a non-NPT country, while considering its membership bid of the elite group that regulates trade in nuclear material. At the plenary, despite strong US support, China had blocked India's bid on the ground that it was a not a signatory to the Nuclear Non- Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

On security and counter-terrorism ties, Modi said they have agreed to strengthen security and intelligence cooperation against terrorism and radicalisation, including in the domain of cyber security.

According to the joint statement, the two Prime Ministers agreed to enhance cooperation, bilaterally as well as in the framework of UN and especially in 1267 Committee, to combat the full spectrum of terrorist threats in all their forms and manifestations.

"They called for eliminating terrorist safe havens and infrastructure, disrupting terrorist networks and their financing, and stopping cross-border terrorism. Both sides called for the early adoption of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism that would contribute to the further strengthening of the international counter-terrorism legal framework," it added.

New Delhi
Minister of state (I/C) for Youth Affairs and Sports  Vijay Goel has said that digital media broadcasting will play a critical role in bringing about change in sports broadcasting in India. Addressing the Big Picture Summit 2016 , he said increasing penetration of internet, mobile devices and cheaper data services especially in rural areas will prove game changer in this direction. He said Broadcasters must focus on how sports are delivered to these audiences.

Goel said, data suggests that more than 60% of the Digital Audiences in India is within the age group of 13-35 years. This is the base that Sports needs to capture to build up the overall Business of Sports. He said, there is a need for Brands and Advertisers to come forward and recognize the power of Sports delivered to young India with respect to both, a Return on Investment and Corporate Social Responsibility aspect.

The Minister said, the Government is committed to work towards building up a culture of sports and improving the business of sports. All stakeholders must work towards this common objective. He said it is his belief that Broadcasters focused on innovative ways to reach out to youth would be the real game-changers and will create a far greater impact on the overall business of Sports in India.

Outlining the importance of sports Goel said, it is evident that more and more people are taking up sports. Sports in India has already taken its first step in the right direction in the last 3 years. A majority of Sports Leagues have been launched including Football, Kabaddi, Wrestling, Hockey, Tennis, Badminton and more. He said, this has been made possible by persistent efforts by various stakeholders. A large talent pool in sports such as Football, Kabaddi, Hockey, etc. has mass appeal. This has not only impacted Sports as entertainment but also the Tourism and Infrastructure sectors.

The Minister said, packaging of the Sports League as Entertainment has been the game changer. This clearly reflects in more than 450 million viewers of Indian Super League. The most interesting revelation has been Pro Kabaddi League with a viewership of more than 500 million.

He said, what is even more interesting to note is, that some of these leagues have more than 40% female viewers on television. Innovative media campaigns around new sports have been the force behind the increasing Sponsorship Revenues. All Media platforms including TV, Radio, Print, Digital and off Air have played a crucial role in the success of the newer leagues. Advertisers and Investors must recognize that without a talent pool of sportspersons, this will be tough to sustain.

Goel said, sports must become an integral part of our society and value system as it has the power to shape India as one of the most competitive nations in the world.
