Ambedkar University Delhi will hold its 5th Annual Convocation at 10.30 a.m. on December 9, and will have Tibetan spiritual leader, The Dalai Lama, as its chief guest. The Dalai Lama will address the large gathering of the graduating students, faculty, staff members and distinguished guests on this occasion. The Lt. Governor of Delhi, Najeeb Jung, in his capacity as the Chancellor of the university will preside over the convocation ceremony. During the convocation, 530 students who have completed the prescribed requirements during the academic year 2015-16 will be awarded with PhD, MPhil, MA, BA (Honours) degrees in various fields of studies such as economics, development studies/practice, psychology, women's and gender studies, business administration, education, environment and development, English, history, psychology, sociology, mathematics, human ecology, history, Hindi, design, film studies, literary art and visual art, performance studies and social sciences and humanities. Further more, 19 students will be awarded post graduate diplomas in early childhood care and education, development studies, environment & development and publishing.
The breakup of the students who will be receiving their degrees and diplomas are:
- BA (Honours) Degree - 169;
- M A Degree - 300;
- M. Des.- 5; MBA - 33;
- MPhil Degree - 22;
- PG Diploma - 19 and
- PhD - 1 (Total = 549).
The first Ph.D. degree of the Ambedkar University Delhi will be awarded to a female student during the convocation. The female students who will be receiving various degrees and diplomas during the convocation constitute 66 percent of the total students. The university is presently running seven undergraduate, 17 post graduate, two PG diplomas, five MPhil and nine PhD programmes (Total 40 programmes) through its nine schools namely, Business, Public Policy and Social Entrepreneurship, Culture and Creative Expressions, Design, Development Studies, Education Studies, Human Ecology, Human Studies, Liberal Studies and Undergraduate Studies.
The university has recently added two new schools namely, School of Vocational Studies and School of Law, Governance and Citizenship. At present, the university has enrolled about 2000 students in two campuses at Kashmere Gate and Karampura. The new campus at Karampura was started in August during the current academic session 2016-17.
The male - female ratio of students is 2:3. In the past, Professor Andre Beteille (noted sociologist and writer), Jairam Ramesh (economist and former union minister), Aruna Roy (social activist) and Ashok Bajpeyi (eminent writer and former civil servant) have delivered the convocation address. The university has so far awarded 1285 degrees and PG diplomas since its first convocation in 2012. Ambedkar University Delhi (AUD) was established in 2007 by the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD) through an Act of Legislature and was notified in July 2008.
